  1. Just get on the treadmill. I lost 30 pounds in 2 and a half months doing that! Good luck!
  2. Eat less, exercise more. Try doing some strength conditioning (weights) and sports that helps your cardiovascular health. Now that it's summer and it's getting hot, it's usually easier to lose weight. Start out easy, and then work yourself harder each time. I'm a big runner, so not only do I run, but I crosstrain in other sports for about 20 mins min. whenever I can.. usually swimming, hiking, horseback riding, and biking helps great deal. You don't have to do a lot.. start out by doing it at a comfortable pace, and then pick up from it gradually. And always remember to eat right and stay away from saturated fats and refined sugars. Make sure you eat the right amount of the 4 food groups each day.
  3. Jeez, I don't know that I should be answering you, as I have no expertise in this area. I decided to respond because, well, because I am 61, and I go to a gym several times a week -- I shoot for 5x/wk, but when I get sidetracked with work, I sometimes don't pull that off. I work cardio and weights (resistance) and I do some rudimentary Yoga for stretches. I lost control of my life, and so, of my diet and daily routine for about 10-13 years, very crucial years. When I went into the experience, I was slim, a size 6, 128 lbs. When I came out of the experience I was a schlump, size I'm still not sure, weight around 160. When you are my age it takes time to look even a little like a girl, a female -- a female female, if you know what I mean. I looked like a jello-encased torpedo; I now look like a healthy old bag, which is an improvement, a serious improvement. I don't know how hard Curves works you, and I don't know how athletic you are. But get something through your head right now: 40 is young. It is young. You are not old, and your body is not old. You can do this, okay? I joined a real gym, the kind with treadmills, where guys who look like the Incredible Hulk work out (and sometimes hook up). I got on the elliptical trainer and could only do 5 minutes. But within a month, I was up to 30 minutes. I found that cardio brought my body back a lot. It made me feel much better, more confident, more present. Like I could handle whatever came my way. I also like the resistance machines, especially -- you will think this strange -- the ones that work the upper body and the arms and the pectorals. When you see older ladies in dresses, you can tell them from behind, because their shoulder line is not well-defined, and that affects how dresses fit. I worked my pectorals because that's what holds your boobs up. Your boobs may sag, but you can put on a bra. It's your sagging muscles that give you that amorphous look. I worked my back muscles to stave off that curvature that comes with age. But as a bonus from this work, I can sit on a stool for literally hours and not stoop, because my muscles are toned. My arse was pointing toward hell, and I suppose from now on it always will, but my glutes help me fill out skirts so I look like a girl (not a knockout but a GIRL) and not a mass of wrinkles, and gives a terminus to the toned back that at least is identifiably female. The cardio is the best overall work I do. And I work hard. My hair and clothes are completely wet when I am done, winter or summer. Cardio works your core, particularly if you exaggerate the side-to-side swaying as you move from leg to leg, and keep your abdominal muscles tight. The weight, which was not healthy weight, and not weight I would ever have gained on my own, just fell away up to a point. And then last January, I decided to get rid of more of it intentionally. I ate a simple, low-fat diet, emphasized salads and fat-free dressings, lots of fish and chicken (but I rarely eat red meat anyway), and snacked on fruit. I take supplements, too, with extra B's and C's which help you metabolise your food more efficiently. And I lost another 10-12 lbs. The most important thing that you can do is just chill. You can't correct years of, you know, burgeoning development in one month. But you can do an awful lot, because you are young enough to pull it off. And you can really bring your confidence level and your sense of presence up. I admit to a bias. I don't like these women's places. You may not want to listen to me here. As I said, I am athletic and I like a challenge, like to push myself. You may want to stop in at a real gym and give it a week's trial. Lots of these places have free week membership, and pick out a personal trainer, buy or get a free session from someone. There is a right and a wrong way to do everything, and especially with resistance, you need to know how to do things correctly. See how you feel (aside from sore) after your trial period. You will definitely notice a difference. But maybe it isn't for you. I can assure you, that if it works for a 60-year-old, it'll work even better for you. But my basic strategy was to increase my caloric output by 500-700 calories per day, and then to cut out fats and simple carbohydrates almost completely. As you build muscle mass from resistance and cardio (which you will do more quickly than I), your body consumes more calories simply to maintain itself. I watched my weight a little, but didn't weigh myself often. I didn't have weight goals or size goals. I honestly didn't know how much I would weigh, because I was building muscle and muscle is heavier than fat. My goal was that I wanted to look healthy, to be firm (no wiggly upper arms; no thighs like bread dough); and to look like a girl when I put on a skirt or whatever, and I wanted to exude that kind of confidence that just comes from being in control of your body, claiming it, using it and enjoying it. Which is why I tell you to chill. Whatever you choose to do, you will be just fine. I recommend my more aggressive kind of workout, although you may be a real girly-girl and that kind of workout is not good for you. If you set unrealistic goals, you set yourself up for frustration and self-denigration. You are young; you can do a lot. You will pull it off. Just slip into the process, get the max out of everything you do, feel your body growing more solid and real and vibrant and whatever your August goal is, you will trump it if not with inches and pounds, with vibrance and confidence. As the folks at Reebok say -- just do it.
