How to lose inches

Losing Weight, NOT JUST INCHES?

I'm thinking I'm not doing something right. I walk 1-5 miles a day (depending upon day), go to the gym 3x/wk and do treadmill, bike 1-3 miles at a very fast pace, and then swim a mile/56 lenghts. I even walked a 26.2 mile marrathon in September without issue. Here's the thing: I am NOT losing weight!!! I've lost inches, and my cholestorol levels have gone down 30 points (it's very high). I need the encouragement of looking at the scale and seeing the #s go down. My routine is to do 46 gms protein shake 6 a.m., omelett around 11:30, snack at 1pm, dinner around 5:30 (varies) and snack around 8pm (peanuts/fruit/nofat pudding). My BMI is still around 38 and I don't know what else to do! Any suggestions? thank you for your responses. The BMI # I got while filling in internet questions to 'buy my diet' websites. I used to be at a healthy weight, but then had 5 jaw surgeries (yes with jaws wired) over the last 3 years. The liquid dieting caused my system to be screwed up and I wound up gaining 60lbs once I could eat food. Here's the thing - I am for the most part vegetarian I'll eat chicken, eggs, and some white fish. The doctor said it's because my Cortisol levels were high and things would level out after my body stopped hording thinking I was starving myself... that was 8 mos ago. This weight is depressing. I know I'm getting healthier, and I enjoy working out as much as I do, it's just seems to be taking forever for results. I've been doing the additional workouts since January (the 3xs/wk ones)

  1. If you are losing inches don't worry about it. seriously, thats a lot better than losing weight. You probably have muscle gain, so that's why you aren't losing weight. but seriously, i'd keep going with losing inches, because for me, I lost 10 pounds and I only went down a jean size. and I don't look different at all.
  2. WOW awesome job so far!!!! but i think you need to do more weight training instead of just cardio. Don't worry- you are doing GREAT! i have never heard of someone so dedicated KEEP IT UP ;-)
  3. since your doing so much exercising, your probably gaining muscle. if you keep this exercise routine going, im sure you will start to lose those #'s
  4. Honestly??? With a BMI of 38, you must be fibbing both on the diet and the exercise routine! Muscle weighs more than fat, so you may be building muscle. What medications are you taking? Your age? If you are telling whole truths in your questions, see a Dr., ask for help. Don't give up the weight loss will happen!! If you are losing inches, something is working right!!
  5. your losing fat and gaining mussel , and mussel weighs more than fat
  6. Hi Ive been dieting and what I've found out that works is to eat one good meal and snack on fruit and veg for the rest of the day. Don't walk or exercise that much because your turning your fat into muscle. and watch you Carbs. I lost about 5 to 10 pounds a month and that good for me.
  7. Indeed you are working very hard and the things you are doing is not bad at all. I also suggest that you take some notes of what this lady doctor has to give as advice, see link
  8. You are doing great! Inches is a much better measure of how you are doing than weight. As you put on muscle and loose fat you will loose inches. Weight loss is usually muscle loss-not fat loss. Inches lost=fat lost! BMI is highly inaccurate. The best measure of body composition is hydrostatic weighing. Electrical impedance is highly inaccurate and has a large variance-I have seen results change by +/-4% (that is 8lbs of fat for a 200# person) just by drinking electrolytes or taking a shower!! A good measure is also NIR. It is much more consistent.
