How to lose inches

Will yoga make me lose too much wieght?

Im in the process of trying to gain weight because I lost 5 pants sizes in one year due to stress and anxiety. Ive been adding more caleries to my diet, by eating more foods, but healthier foods like soy milk, veggies, fruit, ensures, whey protein shakes, honey nut cherrios w 2% milk, etc. But I also wanna get fit without losing any additional weight. Im thinking about trying yoga for my stress, flexability and strength, Will yoga make me lose inches because my main goal is to gain weight and inches, not lose them...

  1. I wouldn't think so because yoga mainly focuses on strength, flexibility, balance, etc. Any cardiovascular benefit is not going to be harmful to your goals. I think you are spot-on choosing yoga as a way to do what you want. It will help maintain lean muscle mass and create good tone.
  2. No it won't. Yoga can help overweight people lose weight, through chronic stress reduction, not calorie burning. Stress totally messes up your hormonal system. In your case it sounds like there was more acute stress (elevated adrenalin) that can make people lose their appetite. Chronic stress (elevated cortisol) is type that leads to weight gain (especially in the belly). Yoga is great for stress and anxiety and will help you rebalance your stress hormones. It will also help you build muscle which is a great way to gain weight the healthy way. I have seen people lose weight through yoga, but only if they needed to lose weight, and I have never seen people get underweight through yoga. Theoretically, I suppose it might be possible if you go bananas and start doing 3 hours of power yoga a day, but I would start with gentler classes if I were you. At least until you get the hang of it. I think yoga would be a great choice for you. Regardless of the weight, I think you will love the calmness yoga brings your mind.
